Project Goal: Create a short 360° cinematic experience in Reallusion's iClone7 animation software to be viewed in an Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset. This project is called A Question of Motive. It's a full 360° VR experience designed for VR headset, but still entirely viewable on desktop or phone! I created this project from the ground up: scripted the plot and dialogue, created characters in Reallusion's Character Creator 3, sourced assets, edited together the audio track, directed and captured motion data with actors Hunter McCoy and Chloe Siegel using mosuits, did some voice acting myself (and Hunter did the voices for the other two characters), and creatfull lighting and cleaned up the animation in Reallusion's iClone7. All in all, I'm very pleased with how this project turned out. I hope you enjoy!
Script & Character Design
To the right is some of the early character design work I did for this project. I designed my three characters, Vivian (left), John (middle), and Charles (right) in Clip Studio Paint Pro to get a feeling for their fashion senses and personalities before moving into Character Creator and making them as 3D, rigged objects. Even though many changes happened between initial and final character designs, it was important to have these 2D sketches early on so that I had an idea of what the characters were like as I was writing the script and deciding on how I wanted other aspects of my scene to work visually.
To record motion for this project, I and a team of actors donned Xsens Awinda motion capture suits, Rokoko Smartgloves, and (in Hunter's case) a helmet to record facial motion capture and acted out the scenes GSU's Creative Media Industries Institute's main studio. Click through the photos to the left to see my actors Chloe and Hunter in their full gear as we recorded—and I directed—the first scene of A Question of Motive.
A video clip of my presentation of A Question of Motive at the Creative Media Industries Institute's semesterly Student Showcase is featured in Georgia State's institutional spot that was broadcast nationally on ESPN and also plays regularly during campus events. Take a look at the video below.
