Crypt of the Damned
A 3D Interior Environment
Project Goal: Create an environment project where students will build a 3D exterior or interior environment based on provided references and blueprint drawings.
Please scroll through the above images to take a look at my 3D modeling environment project I titled Crypt of the Damned! Image descriptions below:
(1) Everything you see in here was created by me, with the exception of the candle flames, the garlic plants on the floor, and the HDRI used to generate the background environment. I modeled every object in Autodesk Maya, textured in Adobe Substance 3D Painter, and staged/rendered in Unreal Engine. I also created the lighting effects in Unreal, as well as a fog particle effect using Blueprint Visual Scripting.
(2) We've got a focus on the ironwork on my candelabra here - which was a challenge to model!
(3) The Bible here is in the foreground, while there are some stakes and (just barely visible) candlesticks in the background. Texturing the plinth for the coffin to sit on was one of my favourite parts of this project, and I love how this shot shows off the scrapes and cracks on the stone!
(4) You may have noticed some stakes hanging out off to the side in the last image. Here they are in their full glory. They were a fun and simple asset to create and help build the story of the scene.
(5) This is another angle I loved from this scene. There's so much detail you can see from the coffin, the Bible, the plinth, and the lighting hitting the garlic flowers on the floor.
(6) Here's a close up of the coffin from my Crypt of the Damned project. I put a lot of effort into the detailing on the scratches and bloodstains, as well as the paneling of the wood itself. Detailing an asset can be just as integral to the story of a piece as the overall setup!
(7) The candlesticks from my Crypt of the Damned project presented an interesting challenge. The models themselves are simple tapered cylinders with a dip at the top and another cylinder on top for the wick, but what's a candlestick without melted wax? I hand-painted the wax drips on each individual candle (yes, they're all different) in Adobe Substance 3D Painter to achieve this natural melted look. The kicker is this: none of the material presets in Substance even came close to emulating wax, so I created my own material and brush combo to achieve this look.
